Husbands

The Problem with Nice Guys

I’m fortunate. I got a handle on my fake niceness before it fatally wounded my marriage of 16 years. For most of my adult life, I gave faux smiles and was dangerously passive for the same reason a squid squirts ink: I wanted to hide – at home where it was difficult to lead, at work where it was hard to excel and at church where I feared being authentic.

Money Talk: The 'You' on 'Unity' is silent
Couples who look to each other for accountability and support will reap the benefits of increased intimacy and wealth. Dave Ramsey, finanical expert, looks at money and communcation.

Men's Midlife Obstacles
In the film City Slickers, the main character asks his boss, “Have you ever reached a point in your life when you ask, ‘Is this the best I’m ever gonna look? The best I’m ever gonna feel?’ And it ain’t that great.” For some men, this stage of life is a critical time when they assess what they’ve accomplished and what the future holds.

A Work in Progress
After several of these painful discussions, I slowly came to understand my wife held certain expectations for our marriage that were not being met. Even before we were married, she longed for a husband who would fulfill the role of spiritual head of the household.

Of dirt and dollhouses
 - Opposites drawn together
In our house, words like crash, punch, tackle, shoot, explode and deep-fry were normal. We ruined the “good towels” by wiping down motorcycles. Body noises occurred approximately every 12 seconds. Something broke daily (but I didn’t do it). What can I say? There were four boys in our house.

Sexual needs: his & hers
Sexual issues topped the list of their arguments. He complained that she was never interested. She responded by pointing out his obvious lack of romantic overtures. How could something designed to create unity have become so divisive in their young marriage?

Lost in Translation
Dennis’ words seemed harmless. Combine a couple of words and a cute face, and you have a simple request from your adoring husband of six months, right? Wrong. What I did was blend that simple request about dinner with the time I spent grocery shopping and my “I don’t like cooking in the first place” feelings.

Drifting apart
Karen couldn’t pinpoint when she and her husband started to drift apart, but she knew they were heading toward danger. She remembered how she used to anticipate her husband’s return home from work. Now his arrival seemed like an intrusion.

Flirting with infidelity
Nobody wakes up one day and suddenly decides to begin an extramarital affair. Infidelity begins in the heart and mind. By the time a person physically commits adultery, he or she has been indulging for quite some time in progressively more intense mental and emotional affairs.
