Celebrate Marriage Week
Marriage Week seeks to see marriages transformed across the nation.
Our marriages are not private matters. Not only are they the basis for providing emotional security for our children, our marriages matter to our extended family. They matter to our employers. They matter to society. They are the fabric that holds families together. On average married people live longer and have good relationships with their children; families enjoy better physical health; married men earn more money.

The quality of our nation's marital relationships will be a determining factor in the destiny of Australia. The strength of Australia's families depends on the qualities of the relationships between our nation's mothers and fathers. Therefore marriage should be encouraged, strengthened, valued and supported by society and individuals in every possible way as a social good.
Marriage Week is an annual celebration, initiated in Australia in 2007, to reinforce and promote the benefits/importance of marriage and increase awareness and value of pre-marriage and in-marriage education. It is a great time to reassess marriage. A time to see that it is more that a piece of paper, a word or a contract. Marriage is a relational institution that makes two people one entity – a great team.
Celebrating Marriage Week affirms that:
- Marriage is a binding, public commitment that becomes the foundation of healthy families, healthy children, and a healthy community.
- Marriage is the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.
How can you be involved in Marriage Week?
- Make a special effort to do something for your own spouse that would make them feel appreciated and loved.
- Think of those whose marriages have been a model to you over the years and send them a letter, an email or a card of appreciation.
- If you have a healthy marriage, offer to mentor or coach a younger married couple.
- Send a note of encouragement or a relationship-strengthening book to a couple who were married this past year.
- Have a gathering for your extended family and ask the longest-married couples to share with the entire family their secrets to a lasting marriage.
- Encourage your church to register/become a partner and participate in Marriage Week.
