Grandparents

“Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken in right circumstances.”
Proverbs 25:11

Welcome to Focus on the Family Australia’s Grandparent's Talk. This is a page specially designed for grandparents. What a privilege to be a grandparent and to have the opportunity to speak words of gold into the lives of the coming generation.

If you are just beginning this new chapter of your life, or like me, you have been a grandparent for many years, we can always benefit from the wisdom of others. The creative ideas and suggestions are designed to spark the imagination and add richness to your relationship with your grandchild.

Enjoy the column, “Apples of Gold” in which grandparents share their beliefs and dreams. Among our products you will find many books and CDs to help families during the challenging years of growing character-filled young adults.

If our words are appropriate to the circumstances, they will be like golden fruit in silver settings, making the listener rich in every way.

If you would like to tell me about your special grandchildren, I look forward to hearing from you. Take time to contact me today at morganw@families.org.au.

Grandmother of five young adults

Mental Health
WinProfessor Patrick McGorry is acknowledged as 2010 Australian of the Year. He is a leading international researcher, clinician and advocate for the youth mental health reform agenda.
Flying with Eagles
Well-known writer Chuck Swindoll tells the story of the eagle who scratches in the ground with the turkeys. He realises that there is more to life than hanging around with the chooks and determines to fly high in the sky...
Alabaster Box
As we approach Easter, we see the supermarket shelves piled high with foil wrapped chocolate eggs, rabbits and bilbies and a variety of hot cross buns.
Giving Thanks
In the southern states of Australia the trees are beginning to change colour and the mornings are becoming crisp with that sweet smell of damp grass and misty sunrises.
Golf Ball Sized Hail Stones
A wild storm recently hit Melbourne, bringing flooding rains, thunder, lightning and hail the size of marbles, golf balls and even lemons.
Grumblers and Complainers
Only six weeks after being liberated from slavery, it is recorded that the children of Israel grumbled about the lack of food and comforts.

A Little Means A Lot
I guess many of you have seen a recent TV advertisement where a young man, watching cars crashing all around him, complains loudly, "What about me?"

Dangerous Behaviour
When a 13 year old boy takes a knife to a fellow student at school, as happened in Brisbane this week, and the wounds lead to his death, what can we say?

Australia Day
How do you feel about celebrating Australia Day? Do you have a sentimental, once-a-year surge of nationalistic pride on 26 January? Is being an Aussie something that has been part of your family for generations?

A Special Tablecloth
Do you have a special tablecloth that you bring out for festive occasions? Mine is a large white cloth trimmed with Belgian lace.

Apples of Gold
Apples of Gold are words of great value tucked into a small, shiny package. Robert and Carol Colman have graciously responded to a questionnaire about their grand parenting styles.

Stepping In
I never dreamed I would be a grandmother who wasn’t allowed to see her grandchildren. But I am.

Hugs & Hope
So many stories of pain, heartache, loss and bravery have come from the terrible bush fires in Victoria.

Anger & Apology
Anger is like the red light on the car dashboard…when it starts glowing, its time to heed the warning signal. It’s time to look under the bonnet and find the cause of the trouble. What is the source of anger?

Second Time Round
Because of family illness, emotional or marriage breakdown or financial failure you may be required to become a surrogate parent, take on the responsibility of parenting the second time around.

Seen & Not Heard
What were the rules at your dinner table when you were a child? Were you told that children were seen and not heard?

Family Ties
Recently I spent time visiting family members in the country. It entailed more than a three hour drive to take one brother to visit our other brother.

Role Models
"Cops Get off Light, Reality Check For Rudd, Artists Rake It In, Oldest Driver Still in Gear, Jessica's Golden Run, etc, etc." Which of these people would you wish to be role models for your grandchildren?
